History of the SLO County Band

The SLO County Band has been playing continuously for over 130 years. Records show that it was formally organized in 1881, but the existence of the band was mentioned in newspapers as early as 1874, when its ancestor, the San Luis Obispo Military Band, was founded.

Since then, it has been affiliated with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Cuesta College. It now plays under the umbrella of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District's Adult School.

Throughout its existence, the SLO County Band has been a force for boosterism -- helping to celebrate the birth of the nation in a variety of national holidays, raising funds for various public projects at performances, and acting as a rallying force for the community. Members come from all over the county, from north of Paso Robles on south to Nipomo and all points between.
